Super Bowl Party Ideas

Friday, January 24, 2014

The teams have been made and the party planning begins! If you can believe, I have never hosted a Super Bowl party. I am not a football fan, I don't keep up with that. But for some reason I always tune into the game on Super Bowl Sunday. It's the hype, the commercials and just the energy level I feel from people both before and after the game that gets me hyped up. Which is why I have always wanted to host a party but because I never keep track of the sport I never know when it is until it is too late to even plan. So this year I made sure I would be on top of things! Which is why I am making this collection of Super Bowl party ideas - in case you too are stuck and not sure on what to plan! Hope these help in the planning process! I am getting excited!

Big Game Tabletop of Snacks
This is probably my most favourite idea! I always love displaying food in a visually appealing manner. I always think that the better looking the food is set up the better tasting it will be! And with yummy snacks and drinks served, the food will taste even better!

Fun Mini Games
You can incorporate small games as you watch the game, to keep things interesting especially at the beginning of the game. I love some of these ideas!

Spicy Chili

Wednesday, January 22, 2014

Hey everyone! I love cold snowy days of winter because we always make chili in our house to warm up our bodies and souls (living in Canada you need to!). This is a recipe I have tested and recreated until perfection. I love the combination of ground veal and pork to add a very yummy taste, since I found that beef can be kind of bland. And this way you do not need to add many spices to the meat.

Plus adding in all those yummy and flavourful veggies adds a special flavour to the recipe all on its own! Just look at the beautiful colours! LOVE!!

I hope you enjoy this recipe as much as I do! enjoy!

Spicy Chili
Prep time: 15 min        Cook Time: 60 min           Yield: 6-8 servings

Ingredients
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 whole onions, chopped
- 2 chopped red peppers
- 2 heaping spoonfuls chili powder
- 1 lb ground veal
- 1 lb ground pork (or you can use beef)
- 2 28 oz cans whole tomatoes
- 1 19 oz can black beans
- 1 19 oz can white kidney beans
- 2 medium carrots, chopped
- 3 stalks celery, chopped
- Salt and Pepper

Directions
1. In a large pot on medium-high heat, add garlic and cook until fragrant, about 1-2 minutes. Add onions and peppers and cook until soft and caramelized, about 5-7 minutes. Add ground meat and chop the meat up with a wooden spoon (so you don't get meat chunks). Season with chili powder and cook until brown and thoroughly cooked.
2. Add tomatoes, black and kidney beans, carrots and celery. Season with salt and pepper. Cover, simmering on medium heat for one hour. Serve warm with soda crackers, corn bread or garlic bread.

Decor Trends for 2014

Monday, January 20, 2014

With a new year upon us, adding some more colour or decor pieces will help liven up your space and make it feel fresh. Here are some of this year's predicted decor trends!

1.  Radiant Orchid
via

Let's start off with the colour of the year! Pantone's choice for colour of the year is Radiant Orchid. This colour reminds me of freshness and of spring and all things girly! You don't need to go out and repaint your living room, bedroom and bathroom in this colour - that might be an eye-sore. But you can add splashes of this colour around your home as pillows, area rugs and decor pieces.

2. Metals
The outlook for metals this year is copper. Of course, brass and gold will still be in style, but copper is slowly starting to creep into many designs throughout decor pieces. Aside from copper, mixing up your gold, silver and brass is also a hot trend around the house, although this has been around for some time now.

3. Chunky Knits
Chunky knit anything brings a lot of comfort and texture to a room. This rising trend is now being seen used as a pattern in ceramic pieces to add the appearance of knit texture.

4. Geometry Adding a few pieces of geometric design into your decor will add some vintage flare to your space. Add geometry from pillow fabrics, area rugs, wall art, wall paper or small decor pieces.

5. Blue Hues
Cobalt blue, navy, and turquoise are all still in hot demand for accent pieces and statement subjects. Paint an accent wall in turquoise, add a navy blue couch or add some cobalt blue accent pillows. Whatever it is, you can be sure these are here to stay a while.

 6. Light Woods
Light woods are moving in fast and taking over the dark espresso and black stained woods. Things from hardwoods to dining room tables to end tables.

Blueberry Coffee Cake

Friday, January 17, 2014

Mmmm...who doesn't love coming home to some home baked goodies on the counter and that fresh smell of coffee cake in the air? Although it isn't blueberry season, nor is it even spring for that matter, I thought some warm happy thoughts would make the warm weather come faster (right??).

Anyways, I had some frozen blueberries left in my fridge and decided I will use them all up for this perfect recipe! I had a bit more blueberries than what the recipe called for, and they still turned out perfect! A perfect companion to any green tea in the morning! Enjoy!

Moist Blueberry Coffee Cake
Prep time: 10 min        Cook Time: 35-40 min           Yield: 16 squares

Ingredients

Cake
-1 3/4 cups All Purpose Flour
-1 tbsp baking powder
-1/2 tsp salt
-3/4 cup sugar
-1/4 cup butter, softened
-1 egg
-1 tsp. vanilla extract
-3/4 cup milk
-1 1/2 cups fresh or frozen blueberries, thawed and drained

Streusel Topping:
-1/2 cup All Purpose Flour
-1/2 cup Quick Cook Oats
-1/4 cup packed brown sugar
-1/4 cup butter, softened
-Icing sugar, for dusting (optional)

Directions
1. Preheat oven to 375ºF. Grease a 9” cake pan or line with parchment paper.
2. For the cake: In a medium bowl, combine flour, baking powder and salt. Stir to combine well. In a separate bowl, cream together sugar, butter, egg and vanilla. Slowly add milk while stirring to combine. Begin adding your flour mixture to sugar mixture, stirring as you combine. Stir until all ingredients are moistened and combined.
3. Spread half of the batter in prepared pan. Spoon in blueberries over batter. Spread the remaining batter over the blueberries.
4. For the topping: In a small bowl, combine all ingredients and stir to incorporate. Sprinkle topping evenly over batter.
5. Bake in the oven for 35-40 minutes or until toothpick inserted comes out clean. Allow to cool for 5 minutes. Cut into squares, dust with icing sugar (optional) and serve warm!

I'm Baaaack!

Wednesday, January 15, 2014

Hey hey everyone! I am finally back after my long hiatus. It felt so good to have the time to spend with family and friends and just relax. Work was very busy before the Christmas holidays and I was just so physically exhausted to even do my insanity workouts (although I have started a whole new insanity 60-day program last week!). I guess I also got lazy sitting around doing absolutely nothing with my time off work. Again, a very much needed break! But, alas I am back and this year will be better than ever! I have been experimenting with some new things around the house to try and spruce up our little nest. Even though my resolutions last year were to do more DIY projects, I think I kind of lost interest or a vision as to what I want to do with the spaces in the house. While I did do some DIY projects, it wasn’t very many projects that I did do. However, 2014 shows to be promising as I have a few ideas lined up and have already begun on a few projects! I will definitely be sharing these on the blog with you all soon! In terms of recipes – oh how I have collected many pictures over the last couple months that I cannot wait to share with you all soon! I hope you all had a great Christmas and are eager to start a fresh new 2014 year!
