GIR Spatula {Review + Giveaway}

Thursday, August 15, 2013

I love cooking and baking, as you all probably know. I also love a good set of tools and gadgets in the kitchen to help me make delicious meals. There is nothing worse than not having what you need, or at least having a poor quality tool, when you are working in the kitchen. It goes along with other things in life - you need a pencil when doing math homework, a paint brush when painting, and scissors when cutting. Imagine having a dull pair of scissors to cut your paper, or a small brush to paint a large wall. So what is that one gadget in the kitchen that I probably cannot live without? A spatula! Without a spatula, you cannot spoon out yummy chocolate cake or creamy Alfredo sauce. After receiving a spatula for review from Get It Right company, I can really see why their company name is what it is!

One thing that I absolutely love about this spatula is the fact that it is made with a single piece of high grade, heavy-duty silicone rubber. This means you can use it in hot foods to mix, stir and saute. It is heat-resistant to 464F, so it makes chocolate melting so much simpler! I used to use a wooden spoon for melting chocolate, for example, but the shape of a wooden spoon always restricted me from folding in the melted chocolate and butter from the edges of the bowl.
The spatula is also flexible but firm. While I was making my banana bread, which is a thicker consistency than the brownie batter pictured, I was able to completely scrape down the sides of the bowl and spoon into the prepared baking dish.

I also tried it out with the potatoes that I fry in a pan on the stove. My wooden spatula always turned my potatoes mushy, and my previous spatula was too flimsy to even stir the potatoes. I am happy to say that I was able to serve actual potato cubes not "mashed" potatoes for dinner!

I would like to introduce you to my (former) spatula. It is a two-piece spatula with a sturdy wooden handle and a silicone head. It was good, at one point in my life though. After a few times in thick batters, the head kept coming off. Also, it is so flimsy that it wasn't able to hold a heavy batter.
And another amazing benefit to the spatula? The range of colours they come in - 11 bright and beautiful colours! They sent me the lavender one, which fits perfectly with the colour theme of my blog! I now always look for the lavender spatula when reaching in the drawer! It just makes me super happy!

Would you like to have your own GIR Spatula? Well, a lucky Taste of August reader is going to win one of these amazing spatulas! Just fill in your info into the Rafflecopter below and cross your fingers!

Giveaway will run from today, August 15th  until Thursday, August 22nd. Open to Canadian and US residents only. Winning entry will be verified so please, play nice :) Good luck all!

Chopula, Scizza and Chobs by Dreamfarm {Product Review}

Monday, May 27, 2013

I love to cook and bake, as you all can probably tell on my blog. I also love having a good set of kitchen tools and gadgets to help me prepare yummy and delicious food. When I discovered Dreamfarm and their amazing line of products, I was so fascinated by their collection of fun and clever kitchen tools that really change the way we work in the kitchen! If you haven't heard of this company from Australia, I highly recommend you surf on over to their website and check their products out! They have a wide assortment of products that I am sure will fit somewhere into your cooking routine!
I was given the opportunity to review three of their awesome products: Chopula, Chobs and Scizza. They all came in pretty packaging! I love it when products arrive in pretty packaging - it feels like Christmas for me!

I was super excited to try out the Chopula, which is half spatula and half chopper. How many times have you tried to chop up something in your pan with your spatula or wooden spoon, only to make your dish look like not-so-glamorous shreds of food? Yup, it happens to me, quite often too!
Dreamfarm Chopula

The head of the Chopula is flexible, allowing for an easy slide under food. The side of the Chopula is strong enough to "chop" through whatever you are making, be it ground meat or eggs. It also has a bend in it's handle to hold the head up off the counter to avoid messy drips.

I tried using it with my brownies that I made this past week. It was super easy to cut through my pan, since using a knife damages my pans. The flexible head easily scooped out each brownie that was ready to be served!
Dreamfarm Chopula Review

How many times have you had to wash your cutting board in between cutting your veggies and your meats, or had to use two cutting boards? Yep, this one always happens to me. But now that I have my handy Chobs product, I don't need to wash and re-wash my cutting boards! Chobs wraps around the corners of your cutting board and raises up your cutting board so that you use both sides of the board without having one side touch your counter or work top.

They also have non-slip coloured icons to let you know which side of the board is for veggies or meat. Chobs also expands to fit any thickness of cutting board.

I think I am in love with this tool! I absolutely despised my old pizza cutting wheel. No matter how many different ones I tried, they were all pretty much the same: useless. Scizza is a pizza scissor. It has a non-stick nylon base that will not damage your pans or cutting surface, unlike the regular pizza wheel.
Dreamfarm Scizza review

The long 4-inch blades easily and completely cut through your food.
Dreamfarm Scizza review

The base easily slides under your pizza, the long blades easily cut through your pizza without affecting the toppings, and with a slight pinch of the blades you can serve each slice without the need to use another tool. Easy! I use Scizza on my homemade thin-crust pizza.

Libre Tea Glass {Review + Giveaway}

Monday, May 6, 2013

Hello friends! Today I am so happy to share with you an amazing product that I recently found!

I am a HUGE tea drinker. I don't drink coffee - it gives me heartburn and I hate that awful after-taste that just seems to linger even after brushing my teeth or chewing on gum. So tea is my "morning wake-up" drink. I always make sure to bring a mug to work filled with tea. However, I always use tea bags because I never found a product that has a built-in strainer for the loose leaves. I love purchasing tea leaves in bulk - it's both economical and environmental! Plus the Teavana store in the mall has a wide variety of tea leaves to purchase that I have always wanted to try - doesn't the Sparkling Strawberry Rose Champagne/Peach Tranquility tea blend sound so yummy?

So when I came across Libre, I was so exited to learn more about the products that they have! Their products are designed to infuse tea while you take it on the go - to work, to school, on a road trip, to your yoga class, or even to visit your friends down the street!

I received the Original Glass n' Poly, which holds 260mL (9 oz.). It is the perfect size for me, since it fits nicely in my car cup holders and my lunch bag when I return home from work.

The first thing I noticed when I opened up the box was the pretty designs all around. I have an eye for pretty things, and I just couldn't help but notice how pretty the designs are, both on top of the lid....

...and on the sides!
Libre Tea Glass Review

Aside from all the prettiness, the design and engineering of the tea glass is what I love the most. At first, I noticed how the interior of the tea ifuser is made of glass, which is awesome since it won't absorb any smell, taste or colour as you use your glass over and over. The exterior of the tea glass is BPA free plastic, which is great since you won't burn your hands holding on to the glass.
Libre Tea Glass Review

And third, the glass actually goes higher than the plastic. This is great if you decide to drink your tea without the stainless steel filter.
Libre Tea Glass Review

The tea glass comes with a stainless steel filter surrounded by BPA free polypropylene.

There are two ways you can steep your tea - pour your leaves right in the glass or pour leaves on top of the filter for teas that need lesser time to steep. I ended up doing the pour-in-the-glass method! I purchased oolong orange tea, which is known to sharpen thinking skills and improve mental alertness. Yay!
Libre Tea Glass Review
I have been using the tea glass for a week now and love it. I love the fact that I can pour boiling water into my glass, grab it and run out the door in the mornings - no hot or boiling sensations felt! I also love the fact that the tea remains hot for a very long time, since my travel time to work is an hour. And the tea is still hot even when I arrive.

However, the only one thing I would recommend is to have a thermometer somewhere to show you when the "ideal" temperature is reached so you can drink without burning your mouth. This way, you don't have to "test" it to see if it is cool enough to drink. Other than that, I am really satisfied with this product and will recommend to all my friends who love to drink tea!

Libre is a Canadian company that ships to both Canada and the US. They have other sizes of tea glasses available, so make sure to check them out! You can order your own libre tea glass through their site.

Libre is so generous to provide one of my readers the same Original Glass n' Poly! Want to win one? Just fill in the info below and cross your fingers!!

Giveaway will run from today, May 6th until Monday, May 13th. Open to Canadian and US residents only. Winning entry will be verified so please, play nice :) Good luck all!

Fabric Button Earrings {Review + Giveaway}

Wednesday, May 1, 2013

My awesome friend Christine, over from Mavy May Designs, has her own shop. She makes these beautiful fabric earrings that are just too cute to pass up. When she offered to give me a set of earrings to do a review on them, I was excited! I love wearing fancy and stylish earrings to go with my outfits. However, I have a problem - I cannot wear just ANY pair of earrings I buy from the store. I am allergic to anything that is not gold or stainless steel. Yes, even silver makes my ears hurt and the area around the holes swell up. And I am talking within mere hours! If you ever want to find out if your earrings are pure gold, give them to me to wear and I can tell you! So as you can see, I have a dilemma when it comes to wearing fashion earrings, and so I rarely (if ever) wear them - other than my plain gold earrings I wear all.the.time!!

So when I saw that Christine's earrings are made with surgical steel posts, I was excited to try them out! I ordered the pink and white checkered earrings, since I love all things pink! And plus, it will match many of my outfits I have!

I ended up wearing them for the first time at the brunch I had with my sister and best friend this past weekend. I figured - we aren't doing much running around so if they do hurt my ears they won't bother me as much.

To my surprise, I ended up wearing them the WHOLE day without feeling anything!! They felt like as if they weren't even there! Now that's what I'm talking about!

I ended up getting so many compliments that day that I couldn't wait to wear them again!

Christine is so awesome, that she is giving one lucky reader a chance to win a FREE pair of earrings! You can choose any style that you want from her shop. Just fill in the info below and cross your fingers!!

Giveaway will run from today, May 1st until Wednesday May 8th. Open to Canadian and US residents only. Winning entry will be verified so please, play nice :) Good luck all!

CampusBookRentals {Review}

Monday, April 29, 2013

As you all know, I am a recent master's graduate. Which means that I went through SIX years of university. Yep, over half a decade. And let me tell you - it ain't cheap! We all know that the costs of tuition is higher today than it was even a decade ago. And with tuition costs rising, students oftentimes find ways to save on other expensive things - like textbooks. It seems like there is always a new edition out each year or two. Which always seemed to frustrate me - the professor would recommend the new edition, I would purchase it at full price, and would only find out that a couple paragraphs have changed or a chapter deleted than from the previous edition (which were not relevant to me a majority of the time). And then when it came time for me to make some money and sell my books, the book store would either "buy back" the books at up to 80% off that what I purchased it for (really?? REALLY!!) or I would not find any buyers because the millionth edition was out!

Which is why I am super excited to introduce to all you college and university students an amazing website: CampusBookRentals. With CampusBookRentals, you can easily save 40-90% off of bookstore prices by renting new and gently used textbooks What is awesome about it is that you can use the books as if they were your own - you can even freely highlight in them without being penalized. Other amazing perks they offer: free shipping both ways, 30-day risk-free returns, flexible renting periods.

For example, I compared a book you can rent through CampusBookRentals and one that is available from the publisher. Did you notice the "suggested retail price" at the bottom of the publisher's website? Convinced?

So, what if you have books you recently bought and don't know what to do with them? Well you can take advantage of RentBack, which is a new initiative that they offer. It allows students to rent the textbooks they own to other students. A great initiative since it allows you to make more money as others use your  books. Forget about selling the book back to the bookstore or to other students; with this awesome initiative, it allows students to make 2-4x more money.

And for every textbook sold, they make a donation to Operation Smile. Not only do you save money, but you also help an amazing cause for children with cleft lip, cleft palate and other facial deformities throughout the world. And these surgeries are provided for free to children throughout the world through Operation Smile.

I would like to mention that this great company is only offered to US students. However, keep an eye out for when it goes international! Go visit CampusBookRentals and see for yourself how you can save during your studies!

CheeCha Puffs {Review + Giveaway}

Thursday, April 25, 2013

I love snacks. But I tend to avoid snacks with high fat, high sugar and high sodium. Not to mention high in calories as well! During movie nights, I sometimes find myself indulging in potato chips, but make sure to "count" the number of chips in my bowl (because if I don't, I would probably eat the whole entire bag during one movie, and then cry about it after!). So it was hard for me to find chips that are low in calories, fat and sodium. So when I found these amazing new "chips" at my local store, I was so excited to try them! They are low in calories and fat; are made with no MSGs, GMOs and trans-fats; they are puffed (not fried!), and come in so many yummy flavours!

So when CheeCha Puffs sent me over some samples, I was more than ecstatic! They sent me over SIX different flavours to try, two bags of each! I only ever tasted two of the six flavours they sent me (one of which I am in love with!), so it was very fun to taste and get to know more flavours. That is one thing I love about this awesome snack: they come in so many different flavours to choose from.

These were the awesome flavours they sent over!

Since I was given so many flavours to sample, I thought it would be fun to do a taste test with friends! This way, they could help me taste all six flavours, since it probably would've taken me a while to do. So I enlisted the help of my husband and two other friends to help in this fun tasting!

Our two favourite flavours were the vinegar and dill pickle.

We also all really loved the cinnamon flavour, especially me (it really does satisfy those sweet cravings!). And with ONLY 92 calories per 2 cup serving (20g), that makes snacking sound like a "good" thing! They really remind me of these:
The one thing we all found from the chips is that they don't have much (if any) food colouring added. For example, the triple cheese flavoured puffs did not leave our hands orange, like cheezies would (yay no orange coloured intestines!).
I think I have my friends hooked on these, since they have never heard of this brand before. They loved the chips. I had to take the pictures before they all got consumed!

CheeCha Puffs also come in great gluten-free flavours: Original, Sea Salt and Spiced Pepper, Sea Salt and Vinegar, Luscious Lime and Fiesta Salsa.

I love what I see when I look at the nutrition label. For the Triple Cheese flavour bag, only 2.9g of fat per 20g serving. The sodium content is a bit high, but compared to regular potato chips - I am happy!

 CheeCha Puffs is a Canadian company, with many retail locations to choose from. And if you are from the US you could purchase them on Amazon or  The Gluten Free Mall.

Am I making your mouths water yet? Well, here is some good news! One lucky Canadian reader will win one free product coupon to try any flavour of your choice! Just fill in the info below and cross your fingers!!

Giveaway will run from today, April 25th until Thursday, May 2nd. Open to Canadian residents only. Winning entry will be verified so please, play nice :) Good luck all!

Energy Bits Review + Giveaway

Friday, April 12, 2013

I was given a great opportunity to try out some Energy Bits to go along my regular exercise schedule. I was so excited, since I tend to lack energy after the end of the day when I usually do my workouts. Since I work an 8-4 job, I tend to come home exhausted from the long drive and a long day. I am also very conscious as to what I put into my body - I do not consume energy drinks, caffeine gives me heartburn, and I am not one to pop any artificial pills for energy. So when I read that these awesome Energy Bits are made from 100% organic spirulina, I was excited to try some!

So, what is spirulina, you ask? It is a microalgae that lives in fresh water and feeds off from sunlight and water through the process of photosynthesis. Spirulina naturally contains organic vitamins, minerals, enzymes, trace elements, protein and amino acids. It provides a natural and excellent energy boost to those lacking energy from everyday stresses or long hours of work, shift workers, sport or fitness enthusiasts, active individuals and people who lack consumption of daily fruits and veggies.

I took some energy bits before my workout. My first day I took 10 and found that I definitely gained some energy than my exercises without taking the bits, but felt that it might have worn off by the end of my 40-minute workout. The second and third days I took 16-24 to see if my energy changed the more I consumed, which it did. On my third day, I took a few more in between my cardio session for increased energy!

Usually, during my 40 minute cardio workouts I start off pumped and ready to work out but after only 15 minutes I tend to get tired and sluggish. Normally by the end of the workout I am ready to just jump in the shower and plop into bed. But not these past few days! I even flew through the ab workouts, which is always a drag after an intense cardio workout. The bits also suppressed my hunger, since I always tend to get a little hungry after any cardio workout.

I am happy to say that these little bits packed with energy have helped bring a little punch to my workout session! Thanks Energy Bits!
(Please excuse my sweaty self!)

Now it's your turn! You have a chance at winning a free sample of these awesome Energy Bits! All you have to do is enter the Rafflecopter below and cross your fingers!

Giveaway will run from today, April 12th until Friday, April 19th. Open to Canadian and US residents only. Winning entry will be verified so please, play nice :) Good luck all!

EnergyBits is also giving a 10% discount when you purchase any of their bags of bits! Simply enter the word "BLOG" into the coupon box and the discount will be applied!
